Calumet Lead Crisis Update – 9 Oct

The inaugural Calumet Superfund Community Action Group (CAG) meeting occurred this Saturday with future meetings scheduled for 15 and 22 October, 2-4pm at the East Chicago Public Library, 1008 W. Chicago Ave. An EPA representative will attend a 29 October meeting, 1-3pm.

Is contaminated water leaking into Calumet residents’ basements? Residents have raised this concern at every community meeting, the EPA has now added groundwater sampling to their cleanup protocol.

Indiana Lieutenant Governor and Republican-candidate for Governor Eric Holcomb visited the EPA’s “One Stop Shop” on Saturday to defend the state’s relief efforts. Speaking for East Chicago mayor Anthony Copeland, Holcomb said, “[t]he mayor said he just appreciates the beautiful relationship they have had with the state.”

The Shriver Center send a letter to HUD president Julian Castro and East Chicago Housing Authority executive director Tia Cauley demanding rent abatements starting from July 2016 to all remaining West Calumet Complex residents.
