Calumet Lead Crisis Update – 7 Oct

Pacific Standard takes a look at the looming housing crisis for West Calumet Complex residents through the experiences of Nayesa Walker and her neighbors. The article intimates that displaced residents who are unable to find housing will be moved to Harborside, a prospect that greatly angered many when first announced at a public meeting in early August.

The latest lawsuit to emerge from the environmental crisis in East Chicago seeks to have former lead factory operators ARCO, DuPont, and Cehmours pay for West Calumet Complex residents’ relocation costs.

The Indiana State Department of Health is hosting a series of “one-stop shop” events at the West Calumet Complex recreation center, beginning this Saturday and offering affected residents help in obtaining free lead tests, birth certificates, and immunizations.
