Calumet Lead Crisis Update – 26 Sept

Many of the letters sent to displaced West Calumet Complex voters were returned, unable to forward. The Lake County Board of Elections is preparing to send another round of mostly undeliverable mail to inform voters when a new voting location for East Chicago district 14 is found.

Both local newspapers, the NWI Times and the Post-Tribune, covered this past Saturday’s EPA forum with residents in zones 2 and 3. Many residents wondered why they were kept in the dark. Literally. The host neglected to turn on the lights after the EPA slide presentation.

The East Chicago Housing Authority has finally delivered a relocation plan for West Calumet Complex residents, admitting that “all 332 families will not likely find housing options” within East Chicago. An excellent story from Lauren Cross of the NWI Times details the difficulties many displaced residents are experiencing in their search for new and healthy housing and the emergency procedures for those unable to find housing as displacement day approaches.
