Calumet Lead Crisis Update – 16 Sept

As reported last evening in the NWI Gazette and this afternoon on WBEZ a Hammond-based attorney has filed a federal class action lawsuit against the city of East Chicago, mayor Anthony Copeland, the East Chicago Housing Authority, BP, ARCO (owned by BP), and DuPont. The suit claims the defendants violated of the Fair Housing Act by allowing residents to live on “land [the defendents] knew, or should have known, was contaminated.” The complaint also accuses the ECHA of subjecting West Calumet Complex residents to “degrading and humiliating treatment,” including excessive police patrols and essentially locking-in the residents by controlling entry and exit with gates.
