Calumet Lead Crisis Update – 19 Aug

The third video report from The Young Turks digs deeper into racial politics, victim blaming, Northwest Indiana as a colony for Chicago’s markets, and Indiana’s lax environmental laws.

Both the Post Tribune and NWI Times reported that the EPA is scraping their remediation plan outlined in a 2014 consent decree. Meanwhile, HUD has found $1.9 million to help relocate residents, with priority to pregnant women and families with young children. Families will be relocated 50 families at a time. NIPSCO has offered to waive deposit fees and past due balances for residents who remain in the service area.
